Abstract
Hanging in a corner of the Kansas state Capitol building in Topeka is John Steuart Curry’s mural “The Tragic Prelude.” A wild-eyed, bearded John Brown, arms out-stretched, clutches a Sharps rifle in one hand and the Bible in another.
